15 IITs offer 7000 seats_still inadequate for 4 lakh students

Number of seats in IIT has increased from 6,000 in 2007 to 7,000. That is a good news if you are trying hard for the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs). The number of Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) has also increased from seven to fifteen. The six new IITs has started from last academic session. Two more IITs will start from the current session. Last year, the Union Human Recourse Development Ministry has started six IIT s in Bihar, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat and Orissa. IIT in Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh will be operational this year. It may seem with so many campuses and thousand extra seats, you will easily get into an IIT, but statistics says otherwise.

For 7000 odd seats there are four lakh aspirants. The second harsh reality is that most of the new campus of IITs do not have good faculty and infrastructure. In fact some of them do not even have proper campus. Each of the new IIT has been assigned a mentor institute for setting it up and its smooth functioning. Each of the new campus is expected to have 120 seats and offer three courses in the first year. However, the institutes are finding it hard to find proper campus in such a short time span. The time is inadequate for setting up such a huge infrastructure.
